Joe Scali

Joe Scali grew up playing hockey. After playing Junior A Hockey, he received a scholarship to play for Cornell University. After graduating from Cornell, Joe played professional hockey in Texas for two years. With his elite background in competitive sports and his passion for training, he decided to pursue a career in the fitness industry. Beginning his career as a personal trainer, he enjoyed the ability to change people’s lives through the value of fitness. After being introduced to CrossFit, Joe was hooked immediately after completing his first WOD, which he describes as a humbling experience. Ultimately, Joe fell in love with the sport of CrossFit, as it gave him a second chance at becoming a competitive athlete. Only months after, in qualified for CrossFit Regionals, where he finished 20th overall. In 2013, he competed with a Team, finishing 4th overall. After finishing 77th in the world during the CrossFit Open in 2014, he went on to finish 4th as an individual in Canada West, just missing the CrossFit Games. His passion for training and vast experience in the fitness industry led Joe to open Semiahmoo Athletic Club.

Sharan Scali

Sharan Dhaliwal grew up in White Rock. Inspired by her entrepreneurial parents, she was accepted into the Bachelor of Commerce Program at the Gustavson School of Business at the University of Victoria, where she specialized in Entrepreneurship herself. She went on to spend another year studying business abroad at Bocconi University in Milan, Italy. Upon graduating, she pursued a career in the Natural Supplements Industry and continued her studies by obtaining her Advanced Sports & Nutritional Advisor Certification. Her passion for health led her to discover CrossFit & Olympic Lifting and she began coaching classes at her local CrossFit box. During this time, she completed and won gold at her first CrossFit Competition. She then competed in the 58kg weight class for Women’s Olympic Weightlifting, where she won gold and qualified for BC Provincials. Ultimately, it was her family and connections with the community that drew her back to open Semiahmoo Athletic Club in White Rock.

Chris Rengert

Chris Rengert played three seasons in the BCHL, where he was a two-time top ten scoring leader for the league. In his final season, while captaining the Surrey Eagles, Chris earned himself a Division 1 Scholarship to the NCAA Alaska Anchorage Seawolves. He opted to play CIS for the University of Western Ontario Mustangs where he studied Kinesiology instead.

Since returning from University, Chris transitioned into his true passion of developing athletes through strength and conditioning and overall skill development. He has furthered his knowledge in the field of high performance through a vast number of specialty courses including:

Over the years, he has helped nurture players from a wide variety of levels ranging from NHL, AHL, NCAA, WHL and BCHL. Apart from Hockey, Chris has worked with many other high performance athletes with sports including swimming and water polo; he himself played and competed at a Provincial and National level.

Mike McCorkell

Mike has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to functional movement training. With over 25 years of experience in the fitness industry, he brings diversity in his coaching to cater to each individual athlete’s needs. Mike’s passion lies in CrossFit, as he enjoys the challenge of constant improvement – with so many different areas of sport & fitness all combined, there is always something to work on to strive towards becoming better everyday. Mike’s extensive training knowledge, positive energy and enthusiasm led him to become a coach at Semiahmoo Athletic Club.

Jy Stewart

Jy Stewart swam competitively for over 13 years, with over 10 of those years at a National level. Through the sport of swimming she received a scholarship from the University of Calgary and there completed her degree in Kinesiology in 2011 while swimming full time and representing the University of Calgary to 3 National Championship wins during her 4 years. After graduating she moved back to White Rock to swim out the Olympic year and retired from swimming in 2012 after Olympic Trials. She then went on to pursue her Yoga Teacher Training Certification and Personal Training Certification, but found there was a level of competitiveness missing for her. She had been introduced to the basics of one of the Olympic Lifts while training for swimming at University, and once she looked more into it she introduced herself to Crossfit at Semiahmoo Athletic Club. She then began competing in 75kg weight class for Olympic Weightlifting and has medalled at the last two Western Canadian Championships as part of Team BC (Bronze in 2016, Silver in 2017). Her passion is in sharing the Olympic Weightlifting movements with others, as well as active rehab from injury. She takes a very technical approach to training and can break down each movement into minute detail.

Hector Hortelano

Hector has been involved with health, sports, and fitness from a young age. Hector played football throughout high school, but really began taking weightlifting more seriously while attending Simon Fraser University, where he also discovered his love and passion for Crossfit. Hector’s enthusiasm and interest in motivating others in health and wellness inspired him to attain a Bachelor of Arts in Health Sciences, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. As a Lululemon Brand Ambassador, Hector enjoys building connections within his community and has participated in various events, such as the BC Lung Association's Bicycle Trek for Life & Breath (200km ride), and many local half-marathons. Over the years, Hector has participated in numerous Crossfit and Olympic Weightlifting competitions and aspires to be a better athlete and coach as part of Semiahmoo Athletic Club.
